ElCycle News

Are you there God? It’s me, ElCycle. (a.k.a., a postmortem post)

Well, I’m pretty certain our calculated 3-6 fans back in July has dwindled down to 0-.3 fans, so I’m not really sure who I’m writing this to.  I suppose I’ll post this just so anyone lost traveler who happens to stumble upon this website while searching for porn and likes what he sees is aware of its current condition.  In all likelihood, no human being will ever read this post, so I might as well be writing it to God.

Dear God,

Remember, 7 months ago, back when I was just a squeaky-voiced teenager with no real problems, the time I came running up to you with that goofy smile on my face, just bursting to tell you the news, that the long-in-development website to be run by Karlton Hickey, Michael Dankanich, Shane Garrity, and myself was finally coming to fruition?  You sat me on your lap and gave me three pats on the shoulder - I remember that because you hit me a little too hard and it stung for a while.  You said, “Son, I’m proud of you.  I know it will be a tremendous website.”  I asked if you meant it, and you assured me yes.

Well, we haven’t really spoken since, and I’m afraid I’ve let you down.  That first month didn’t go so well, but I just kept telling myself that things would pick up soon.  It was just a shaky beginning, we’d find out footing in no time.  Well, that didn’t happen.  The failure that was Weezer Month was my first indication that things would not be so bright and shiny in ElCycleVille.

The months following saw few ElCycle endeavors live up to expectations.  The “Movie Pick” lasted a short time before experiencing a hiatus.  The podcasts continued, despite a shaky month during the summer (but not one that could be blamed on anyone), yet it never was quite what it should have been.  Each one should have been a fun, humorous, and short audio transmissions from the four of us.   Instead, they went on for hours on end, nothing but a bunch of inane musings from a bunch of inane kids.  The comics were unfunny and sporadic at best.  And the consolidation of the Cinema Reviews and the Video Game reviews produced nothing significant.

In recent months, things got even worse.  The movie picks continued thanks to the endless fountain of b-movie wisdom that is Mike Dankanich.  But the song picks, long the only reliable feature of the website, lost a contributer.  I was forced to make song picks for Karl, as he was too lazy.  The podcasts experienced multiple month-long hiatuses, the comics virtually died out, and none of our individual blogs featured any significant amount of output.  Of course, the chat and the forums had died long ago.

We’re currently wrapping up song picks.  The final set should go up in around a week.  I have written a brief diatribe to precede that last batch, so if you’ve enjoyed the sentences in this post you’ll enjoy the sentences in that one. The podcast is expected to wrap up with one final recording in the next month or so.  Expect no more movie picks, and probably no more posts in the multifarious or music blog.

But we’re not fully dead.  Not yet at least.  Ideally, although I make no promises, we will record another podcast in May or June and then maybe a new one whenever we have a break from college.  As for our individual blogs, that is entirely up to each founder whether or not he wants to continue.  I, for one, intend to keep posting in my blog whenever I have anything good to say.  And a new post could certainly wind up in the multifarious or music blogs, especially if Shane ever finishes that review of The Reel Big Fish’s Our Live Album Is Better Than Your Live Album.  The ElCycle chat will continue, but only for Mike and Ethan.

I write this, God, as an apology.  I apologize that ElCycle.org wasn’t everything it could have been.  I don’t know how much of its failure was my fault and how much was other people’s, but I will accept all responsibility for its downfall.  Every night I fall asleep replaying those words you said to me.  “I’m proud of you.  I know it will be a tremendous website.”

If only, God.

If only.

Yours truly,

Zachary L. Haldeman

So, yah.

We have had a videos page for quite a bit, which has our videos all in one little place for your viewing pleasures. You can find it linked to on the homepage. We hit a bit of a dead zone a few weeks back. No new posts, no new nothing, just song picks which happen if we actually choose songs or not… its like they are made by thought. I kinda worked on some stuff, I’m trying to keep the movie reviews going, I’m reviving my blog, etc.

We haven’t podcast in a while. We have a bit more time now. We should probs do that soon.

The forums, they are dead. The chat, she is dead as well. Though ethan and I still chill there 24/7. Ethan is soo lonely without you.

We had a bit of downtime maybe a week ago, the server was misbehaving, so it was whipped back into shape, but after that, I couldn’t update any installs, but now I can, and all our stuff is running at full capacity.

This post is what happens when I’m awake at 11:47 and have admin rights on everything.

Future of Machinima

As you probably saw, we have a machinima section link on the main page. However, the last and only machinima we ever made was months ago, so this section is going to evolve into a videos wing. We should have some section combining our various video website accounts, maybe an rss mashup, etc. Also, he haven’t given up on machinima, we hope to do more soon if we get some writing done.

Global Updates

All blogs are now at the latest version and have state-of-the-art spam protection partially by request of Zach. The forums have also been patched and are running at the latest version.

Okay, so the podcast should be coming this weekend.  We promise hope.

Podcast

Unfortunately, all of us here at ElCycle are insanely busy.  This makes getting together to record a podcast very difficult.  Fridays are pretty much going to be impossible for the forseeable future, while this week, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday have all proven too difficult as well.  (Blame Shane for the last two.)  But instead of not recording a podcast like we did last week, we’re just going to do it extremely late.  We will try to have the podcast up by Monday night, so don’t make plans.

Comic Updates

If you haven’t noticed, Karl and Zach have been adding comics to the website over the past few weeks. Unfortunately, the Comic CMS we use doesn’t seem to know what day it is, and it makes the RSS feeds not work properly, so you have no idea when they’re updated.

I’m currently testing a new, more professional comic management system which will hopefully be fully functional in a few days.

New ElCycle Page

If you hit ctrl + f5 with your keyboard, you’ll find that www.elcycle.org no longer takes you to the main page.  Instead, it takes you to a rather awesome picture Mike made a couple of days ago, and from there you can click ELCYCLE and be taken to the homepage, which has a new url, www.elcycle.org/home.  I hope you enjoy the aesthetics of this new thingy, because otherwise it really has no point.

-Zach

P.S. Sorry, but there’ll be no podcast tomorrow.  Everyone here is extremely busy.  But we’ll be back next week!

Scheduling

So, in the interest of having a new feature here at ElCycle every weekday, we have rescheduled all of our recurring weekly posts.  The schedule, which previously looked like this:

  • Monday - Nothing
  • Tuesday - Song Pick and Movie Pick
  • Wednesday - Nothing
  • Thursday - Nothing
  • Friday - Song Pick and Podcast

will now look something like this:

  • Monday - Song Pick
  • Tuesday - Movie Pick
  • Wednesday - Comic
  • Thursday - Song Pick
  • Friday - Podcast

We know the movie pick has gotten off to a rough start, but we can happily guarantee a movie pick tomorrow.  Meanwhile, we actually have four comics waiting in the wings, but I’m a bitch so we’re still searching for an acceptable scanner.  As Shane mentioned in his recent blog post, half of the folks at ElCycle weren’t around this Friday (including yours truly), which made recording a podcast very difficult.

I for one am happy about the schedule changes, and not just because it finally justifies this news blog’s existence.  It means that every weekday you can show up at ElCycle knowing that a new post awaits you, whether that means a solid 10-15 minutes of songs on YouTube, a brief movie review, a 20-50 minute podcast, or a well-drawn, if otherwise unfunny, comic.  And as for the weekends?  Well, Shane is working on a column for his blog, the icky details of which I will not spoil here, and while I don’t anticipate it being weekly, it would certainly make sense for us to schedule that on a Saturday or Sunday.

And in a slightly unrelated note, as we’re nowhere near thinking about what day of the week it would be on, we have a new ElCycle feature currently in the earliest of planning stages (read: it may not happen) that would bring the fun of ElCycle to a place it hasn’t been before.

So, if you’re one of our 3-6 dedicated fans, rest assured that a glorious future awaits.  It always has.

Sh-Sh-Sh-Shanges

I have no idea what that title is referencing (well, besides Shane), but those other founders say it all the time.  Pretend it says “Changes” if you don’t get it (like I’m going to do).

So everything’s getting revamped these days.  We had two useless blogs, Movie Reviews and Video Game Reviews, and those combined to form 2/3 of Multifarious Reviews, the other third being any reviewable medium besides movies, video games, or music.

The main page has been completely overhauled.  We’re hoping to perfect the design, but I think you’ll all agree on its superiority to what we had before.

We have a new news blog…you know, the one you’re reading.

Other ElCycle updates, reminders, and whatnot will all be here.

ElCycle News

So we’re going through a helluva makeover this moment in time, and we all thought it would be prudent to add a permanent blog where we would fill you in on all the major updates at ElCycle.org.  Hope you enjoy this blog as much as Yahoo! News.
